The Best St. Patrick’s Day Beer

Beer flight

St. Patrick’s Day in Atlanta means parades, bar crawls, and parties with your friends. Whether you’re out for a drink or you want to pick something up for your friend’s party, you can’t go wrong with an Irish Stout, an Irish Red or a Barrel Aged Beer.

Irish Stout

Is it possible to write a blog on what beers to drink on St. Patrick’s Day without mentioning Irish Stouts? We certainly can’t. To be fair, it’s a favorite of Americans and the Irish alike – almost every Irish brewery includes an Irish Stout in its year-round lineup.

While Guinness is certainly the most famous Irish Stout, it’s by no means the only one. Each stout is unique, but they should all feature low carbonation and a creamy quality (even though Irish stouts don’t have lactose).

Irish Red

Another beer type that almost every Irish brewery includes in its permanent lineup is an Irish Red. Its popularity and accessibility make it a favorite for a lot of craft brewers in Georgia as well. This beer features caramel flavors and coloring, plus a relatively low ABV for easier day-long drinking.

Barrel Aged Beers

For all that Bourbon can only be made in Kentucky, a Bourbon barrel-aged beer may have more in common with a famous Irish drink than you’d think. Irish Whiskeys are frequently aged in Bourbon barrels, imparting the flavors of the American oak on Irish Whiskey. Drinking a Bourbon barrel-aged beer is a good way to get some of the flavors of an Irish Whiskey without drinking liquor all day.

But an even better way to get some of the flavors of an Irish Whiskey in your beer is to drink an Irish Whiskey barrel-aged beer. These are rarer but can impart those unpeated malt flavors on top of the Bourbon/American oak flavors.
